Some Plumbing Problems are Caused by Human Error

As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As a homeowner, you will come to find this adage is quite true. Being a little more mindful of your plumbing as you go through everyday life will save you from unfortunate plumbing pitfalls in the future.

Here are some ways to take care of your plumbing:

  1. Only Flush Toilet Paper
While most of us know we shouldn’t flush anything other than toilet paper and waste, sometimes we ignore our better instincts. We end up sending all sorts of things down the toilet including wipes, paper towels, disposable diapers, and feminine hygiene items. But, if you want to keep your pipes clear, don’t flush any products other than toilet paper. Even wipes labeled as flushable may clog your pipes. And be careful not to send massive amounts of TP down the toilet all at once.
  2. Grease Doesn’t Go Down the Drain
When you wash the dishes don’t ever purposefully pour oil down the drain. The grease in the oil will cling to your pipes and eventually turn into a huge clogging problem. Instead of pouring the grease into the sink, scrape plates, pots, and pans into the garbage.
  3. Use Your Garbage Disposal Carefully
Garbage disposals are often the first thing to go when it comes to plumbing problems. Many people mistakenly throw anything down the disposal, harming their pipes.

Don’t put fruits or vegetables that are high in fiber in the garbage disposal. Heavy items like celery can dull the blades and cause the disposal to get stuck. As you use your disposal system, be sure to run lots of cold water down the sink to keep food particles from sticking to the pipes.

  4. Avoid Hot Water in the Toilet
Some people may be under the perception that if hot water in the kitchen sink is helpful, then it’s even better in the toilet. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most sinks are made of durable materials that are designed for hot water, while toilets are made for water that is at room temperature. Pouring any hot water in your toilet bowl can harm it. If your toilet clogs, use a plunger. If that doesn’t work, call Apollo Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning for help.
  5. Don’t Wait for an Emergency to Find a Good Plumber
Establishing a good working relationship with a plumbing company in Portland means you have someone to count on should you have an emergency. Plumbers are skilled tradespeople. You shouldn’t attempt complex plumbing tasks yourself. Often DIY plumbing leads to further problems and expenses.
