Winter weather can mean many wonderful things. Sports, holidays, fresh snowfall, and the opportunity to enjoy time with friends and family are just some of the great things the season brings. However, it also means your pipes and plumbing could be at risk for damage, leaks, or freezing. At Apollo Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, we’re here to help you prevent damage and maintain your pipes this winter.

Take Precautions

Before the weather gets too cold, make sure your pipes are protected from freezing. Wrap foam insulation or heat tape around pipes in your home or use thermostatically controlled heat cables. Another easy precaution to take includes keeping the interior doors of your home open. This allows heat to move through the house more efficiently, helping the heat reach closer to the pipes in your home.

Mid-Winter Maintenance

During the cold winter months, allow your faucets to drip slowly. A little bit of water flow keeps pressure low on the pipes. Low pressure prevents pipes from bursting, which will be way more costly than the few extra dollars added to your water bill each month. Lastly, watch carefully for leaks. If you find one, use a standard caulk gun and seal up the leaks to keep out the chill.

Prevent Damage During Your Winter Vacation

If you’re tempted to turn the heat down when you’re out of town, keep your heat above 50 degrees. Cold temperatures in the home can disastrously affect your pipes. If you’re going away for an extended period, consider shutting off your main water line or at least disconnect your exterior water hoses. This will prevent the water in them from freezing and causing your pipes to rupture while you’re away.
